A few months ago, the following concept was presented to me during my meditation, out of the blue. If a leader has extremely dedicated followers who have been tested “by water and fire” and have had to prove to themselves and others that their leader is right, all while being misunderstood and mistreated by other groups, then at some point these highly dedicated followers will accept anything their leader says or does, even if it’s something they wouldn’t have approved of earlier.

When I received this message, I had no idea what it was about or why I had been told it. But later, when the newly elected President of the USA started to make decisions that were not aligned with his previous values — or at least, not aligned with how we perceived his values — I understood that this message was actually about the dedicated followers of this individual.

Indeed, it is remarkable how people can sacrifice their values for their faith in a particular individual (or a ‘saviour’ figure). But I have only just realised, in complete shock, that some people may even sacrifice their lives for their faith in such a figure. Perhaps it would be better to say that, when a sensitive and positive person puts all their (last?) hope in someone else, and those hopes are betrayed and their values constantly contradicted, but they have no inner resources with which to face the ugly truth, then there is a huge and painful inner conflict about betraying one’s own values in favour of believing in someone or something. If this inner conflict lasts too long,.. it can be gravely dangerous…
